States of Matter Lab Assignment

Procedure:

1. Place ice in a 400 ml beaker to an approximate level of 3/4. Determine the mass of the ice.

2. Record the temperature of the ice.

3. Heat the ice with a hot plate.

4. Record the temperature at 1 minute intervals. Note phase conditions at each recording

5. Turn off heat when water begins to boil.

6. Graph the time and temperature data.

7. Determine how many Joules of energy it takes to move your sample of water through two phase-changes.

(A Calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise 1 gram of water 1 degrees Celcius. 1 Calorie is equivalent to 4.1868 Joules)

Submit your data on a piece of notebook paper with the math displayed first, and the graph below (or on the back if necessary).
